Walking around may not seem like it is going to have much of an impact on your health levels, however, seeing as so many people are not reaching their recommended exercise guidelines, it makes sense to try a variety of ways to improve the level of exercise that you do on a regular basis.
Any type of exercise will do and after a short term, will lead to an improvement to your health. Even activity that may seem like something that anyone can do.
What is so great about walking?
When you think of exercise, you are likely to think about heading to the gym, joining fitness classes or perhaps taking up running. However, this really doesn’t have to be the case. Walking is one of the best ways that you can try to exercise. It doesn’t cost you anything, is something that you can do anywhere and at any time and doesn’t require any fancy equipment.
You can walk alone, you can walk with friends, and seeing as it is relatively low impact, you can do it without putting too much strain on your body.
How much should I walk?
For those who are looking to increase their walking levels, it is best to start smaller and then grow the levels. We recommended that you focus on reaching 2,500 steps each day, once this has become easy to achieve, then you should move on to 5,000 steps, then 7,500 and finally 10,000 steps.
10,000 steps, for the average person will be in the region of 5 miles. Which may sound like a lot if you were walking in a straight line, however, if you think about the amount of walking that you do on a regular basis, it seems much easier to reach.
The simplest way to figure out how much you have been walking each and every day is to wear a pedometer, which can then be clipped to the waistband of your trousers. Another option is to download a step tracking app on your phone, which will track the amount of steps you make on a daily basis.
For those who want something a little on the fancier side, there are also fitness bands that are designed to not only look at your steps, but also your heart-rate, the calories that you burn and sometimes even the steps that you take.
What are the benefits of walking for your health?
So, now you know how far to walk each and every day, why not give it a go? There are a whole host of benefits to getting walking more.
One is that it helps to control your weight, which is one of the main reasons that many people will decide to do it. Not only this, but being active, even for what seems a small amount is good for your heart, your lungs and your body as a whole. It can help with conditions such as diabetes and heart disease, both of which are incredibly important to reduce your chances of developing.
Walking is also something that is easy to do. You can make sure that it fits around your work, your family and any other commitments that you have. You don’t need to plan it in and you may not even realise, but you can reach a big chunk of your steps by simply moving around as you normally would. When you are monitoring your steps, this will encourage you to make more of an effort to get up off of your bottom and get moving. In doing this, you will soon feel the benefit of being more active, which is going to make you feel a whole lot better.
Finally, if you are managing to reach your 10,000 steps each and every day, then this doesn’t mean that you should stop here. Exercise is something that you can always work on and your health is something that could always do with improving. This means that you can keep growing your steps as your time and motivation will allow. Why not aim for 15,000 steps every day? It might be harder to achieve, but in no time at all, you will find that you get there and start to feel pretty great not only on the outside, but also on the inside too.
All from the simple power of walking. Which we think is pretty great!
