Five ‘Off the Beaten Track’ Places to Seek Summer Sun

Brexit may have seen us leave the EU, but these summer getaway destinations still shine bright!

Lake Bled Radovljica Slovenia

Summer is here ladies! And while rain, snow and blustery winds may be banished for now, the UK still isn’t blessed with round the clock sunshine that so many of us crave. Lucky for you, we’ve got the scoop on a curated collection of secret summer holiday destinations, right on our European doorstep.

Brexit may have seen us leave the EU, but these summer getaway destinations still shine bright!

Radovljica – Slovenia

Hands down, Slovenia is one of the most underrated countries in Europe. Nestled next to picturesque Lake Bled, Radovljica is a white washed town of tranquil squares, historic architecture, umbrella strewn patios and its piece de resistance, spectacular views of the Alps! It’s no sun kissed beach destination, but for those in search of a unique European experience with a style all of its own, the region is a fabulous choice.

Dobrota and Budva – Montenegro

Croatia may steal the spotlight when it comes to Eastern European holiday destinations, but as far as we’re concerned neighbouring Montenegro is just as enchanting. With its gorgeous climate, glittering gin-clear waters and breathtaking scenery, places like Boka Kotorska Bay are what European summer daydreams are made of. With luxury hotels, gourmet dining and artisan cocktails all going for around half the price of Croatian hotspots, this is a wonderful choice for holidaymakers who love a little luxury, but don’t want to blow the budget.

Tresco – Scilly Isles

With postcard perfect bays that rival the likes of the Bahamas, the Scilly Isles lie just 28 miles off the coast of Cornwall, which slips them firmly into the ‘staycation’ category. Thanks to their locale in the heart of the warm gulf stream, the horse and cart dominated isles are dotted with palm trees, water sports and sand-spits that seem to stretch for miles. We guarantee you’ll be amazed that this island sanctuary is right in our very own backyard.

Sagres – Portugal

Love sun, sand and salt water? Perched at the tip of Portugal’s coast, Sagres may be small but it packs a serious punch when it comes to bewitching holidaymakers. The pint sized beach town boasts some of the best waves in Europe, backed with chilled out beach cafes, barefoot bars and a wonderfully laid back vibe. Perfect for a carefree girls getaway, or a romantically understated retreat with your man.

Cluj – Romania

With a distinctly cosmopolitan feel, Cluj is the epitome of Eastern Europe’s up and coming scene. Bucharest’s smaller sibling is encircled by ‘chocolate box’ Transylvanian countryside, which makes it perfect for hiking, cycling or picnicking. The nightlife is high energy, the summer festival line-up is impressive and the elegant boulevards, baroque architecture and bohemian ‘cafe society’ feel are hands down infectious. Boutique hotels, cocktail bars and al fresco bistros are popping up across the city, with experiences that match the likes of Venice, Rome and Paris, for a fraction of the cost.

While Majorca, Ibiza and the Greek islands will always have a place in our hearts, there’s something intrinsically exciting about getting off the beaten track, and finding a summer holiday star all of your own.
